Christmas Gifts for a Family Who Had a Baby This Year

A family with a baby born this year has received, by December, roughly four times more baby clothing than the baby can wear before growing out of it.

What they have received almost none of is anything for themselves.

The first rule: they are drowning in things

Storage space in a home with a new baby is already gone. Any gift that takes up floor area is a burden dressed as a present, no matter how thoughtful.

Small, consumable, or wall mounted. Those are the three safe categories.

What new parents actually run out of

Not equipment. Sleep, hot food, and any sense of being a person rather than a support system.

The gifts consistently reported as most valued are unglamorous: a meal delivered, an afternoon of childcare with no strings, a cleaner for a day. If you are close enough to the family to offer any of these, offer it instead of buying anything.

This is a genuinely better gift than most objects, and we would rather say so.

The one object worth buying

There is a real exception. A first Christmas keepsake is bought once and cannot be bought later, because the year on it stops being true.

It is small, it needs no storage, it goes on the tree for the next thirty years, and it is the one item from this Christmas that the child will eventually own themselves. See baby's first Christmas keepsakes.

Buy it this year or not at all. That is the whole argument for it.

What to avoid

  • Clothing in newborn size. They have too much and the baby is already past it
  • Large toys. A four month old cannot use them and they occupy a room
  • Anything requiring assembly. Nobody in that house has a free hour
  • Loud electronic toys. This is a gift to the child and a punishment for the parents
  • Anything that needs a thank you note. If you can, say explicitly that no reply is expected

Do not forget the older sibling

If there is a two or three year old in the house, this is the Christmas where every visitor arrives holding something for the baby. A small gift for the older child, given first, costs almost nothing and is noticed by everyone including the child.

Something with their own name on it works particularly well here, because the point is being seen as an individual rather than as the sibling. See gifts for children.

Frequently asked questions

What if the baby was born in December?

A keepsake with the birth year still works, and dated items become more precious when the birth and the first Christmas share a month.

Is a photo gift appropriate this early?

Yes, and new parents have more photographs than at any other point in their lives. A printed one is rarer than a digital one.

How much should I spend?

Less than you think. The family is not comparing prices; they are trying to get through the week.

What about a gift for the parents rather than the baby?

Strongly recommended and rarely done. They have not received anything with their own name on it since the birth.

Is a savings contribution better than a gift?

Practically, often yes. Emotionally it gives them nothing to open. Many people do both, small keepsake plus contribution.

Small, or not an object at all

An afternoon of childcare beats almost anything wrapped. If you want something wrapped too, make it the keepsake that expires: baby's first Christmas.
